How Long Does It Take to Adjust to Invisalign Aligners?
By Edward Sauer on October 04, 2018
Patients who desire straighter teeth without the use of metal braces can benefit from Invisalign® treatment at our Amarillo, TX dental practice. This orthodontic device moves the teeth using clear removable aligner trays.
But, how long does it take to adjust to the Invisalign aligners? Here, our team at Shemen Dental Group answers this question and explains how patients can enjoy a successful, comfortable treatment experience.
Invisalign: A Brief Overview
Before treatment begins, your doctor will take impressions of your teeth and send the images to a dental lab. A technician works closely alongside your dentist to create a series of removable aligner trays.
The subtle changes in each set of trays gradually moves the teeth into their desired positions. In most cases, treatment can be completed in about 18 to 24 months.
To be effective, the Invisalign aligners must be worn at least 22 hours every day. They should only be removed when brushing, flossing, eating, or drinking. Because the Invisalign trays are clear, others will not even realize you are undergoing orthodontic treatment.
Becoming Accustomed to Your Invisalign Trays
Like traditional braces, there is an adjustment period when wearing Invisalign. When the trays are first placed on the teeth, you may feel slight soreness or tenderness. These side effects are temporary and should subside after the first couple of days. In the meantime, any discomfort can be mitigated with over-the-counter medications, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen.
Although Invisalign does not contain any metal, the trays can still irritate the oral soft tissues until you become accustomed to them. After a while, your gums and cheeks will toughen up. As a result, the aligners will no longer cause discomfort.
How to Reduce Discomfort
First, it is important to understand that the discomfort caused by the Invisalign trays is only temporary. Avoid removing the trays; this will only prolong treatment and take you longer to become accustomed to the aligners.
Invisalign is like putting on a pair of jeans right out of the dryer. At first, the trays may seem tight and uncomfortable. But after a while, they loosen up and begin to feel natural.
In the meantime, distract yourself with a movie, TV show, book, or other activity. Also, remember to take your pain relievers.
Tips and Tricks for Invisalign Treatment
Most patients become accustomed to their new trays quickly. But discomfort is only one side effect of Invisalign treatment. It is a new way of life for patients who choose this option. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you during your treatment process:
- Purchase orthodontic wax: Available in the oral healthcare aisle, orthodontic wax can protect your oral soft tissues from irritation and soreness.
- Store your aligners properly: When you are not wearing your trays, be sure to keep them in a protective case. This will keep your trays safe and prevent them from warping.
- Clean your trays daily: To prevent bacteria from accumulating on your trays, clean your aligners thoroughly every day. Your doctor can recommend products that will keep your Invisalign trays looking and feeling fresh.
